Please see below the Selection Criteria for the various Junior events:

Cadet Winton

This is a national inter-region event, held annually. This event is often used to trial fencers who have shown potential and fencers need not be selected on the basis of any particular ranking list (although this will often be the case).

Selection in future will be a balance of fencers who show development potential and more senior colleagues. This change will give opportunity for ‘possibles’ to gain experience at an Intermediate level, and to increase the depth of talent available for Senior event selection.

Given that this is a regional event (rather than a National event), fencers who might in principle be eligible for Welsh team selection, are able to fence for other regions if they are resident outside Wales.

Age Group

U18 on Jan 1st of the season concerned.

School Games

The selection policy is mandated by School Games.

Cadet/Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championships

This is an elite event; Welsh Fencing will therefore send a competitive team, with a realistic ambition of achieving good results.

The Board has decided that selection to these events will be based on the relevant age-group and weapon rankings, as presented on the BFA website.

Individual Events

Automatic selection for those achieving a Top 20 placing in the ranking lists on selection date, provided they are in the Top 25% of the Ranking List (excluding those with no points), up to the maximum team size

The Board can apply discretionary selection up to the maximum team size where there are insufficient automatic selections

Team Events

Team selection is based on results at the event.

If there are sufficient selections from the individual events to make up a team, then they will be selected for the Team event. The Board will not make further selections simply to make up teams for the team events. No fencer is guaranteed to be selected for the Team, and no fencer selected for the Team is guaranteed to fence.

Age Group

U20 on 1st Jan of current season
