Hello WF community,
September has been a busy month for our Veteran fencers with 2 key events taking place:
- Welsh Veteran National Championships
- Veteran Winton Cup
Please find below a short summary from each event plus some pictures of the national podiums and teams from the Winton Cup
Welsh Veteran National Championships
On the weekend of 6th/7th September we hosted the national championships at the Cardiff Academy of Fencing. We had a good turnout across all events allowing for a competitive showing for all weapons. As usual we also had the Master at Arms trophy up for grabs as well as the Spirit of Veterans prize.
The overall results are shown below

Master At Arms winners were Ruth Rowland and Lyn Robinson for the women and Marc Burkhalter for the men (though Olly would have almost certainly won if he didn't have to head home last minute on the Sunday).
The Spirit of the Veterans prize was awarded to Phil Shepherd Foster
Many congratulations to all our 2025 national champions
Veteran Winton Cup
Over the last weekend (20th/21st September) we ventured to the open spaces of Lilleshall in Shropshire to once again pit ourselves against the other regions in an aim to identify the top dogs of Veterans fencing.
The pictures of the teams and event result are below/attached.
Special mention to our Men's Sabre team who narrowly missed out on winning their event to London and to our Men's Epee team who ran Southern and South East close in a very competitive men's epee category. Finally our top women's team was in foil.
Across the board the team fenced incredibly well achieving significant improvements compared to previous years and as always we fenced with our usual gusto, fun and yet again came out as everyone's favourite region!
Weapon positions are as follows:
WF | WE | WS | MF | ME | MS |
4th | 7th | 5th | 6th | 3rd | 2nd |
Our final overall position was 4th behind South East (who had most of the british squad in their ranks), Southern and South West - the South East are maybe out of reach but an aim of 2nd for the years to come is a real possibility.
Well done to everyone involved!

Finally I would like to wish all our WF veterans who are heading to the world championships in Bahrain in November the best of luck!
As always if you have any feedback or questions please let me know
Best Wishes
Marc
